The medieval village with its small cottages, mansions and walled gardens can still be picked out. The castle was built for the defense of the harbour in 1543 using stone from the ruined Priory. It is romantically placed and stands as a landmark for miles around.

It stands as the most important monument built by the Romans in Britain. The Wall is a huge defensive rampart across the narrowest part of Britain, from the banks of the Tyne in the east to the Solway Firth in the west, and across some of the most remote countryside in England. Spanning nearly 2,000 years of history, dramatic and wild landscapes, towns and cities, exploring the Wall is a must for anyone visiting the North of England.
